GIETHOORN – THE DUTCH VENICE
Join us for a beautiful summer walk through one of the most picturesque and unique places in the Netherlands!
Our next adventure takes us to Giethoorn, the world famous village often called the ‘Venice of the Netherlands’.
With its idyllic canals, charming thatched roof farmhouses, flower-filled gardens and countless wooden bridges,
Giethoorn looks like something straight out of a fairytale.
Unlike most Dutch villages, the historic centre has virtually no roads. For centuries, residents travelled mainly by
boat through the network of waterways that still define the village today. As we wander through this unique
landscape, we'll cross picturesque bridges, stroll along peaceful canals and discover why visitors from around the
world fall in love with this extraordinary place.
The village dates back to the 13th century when settlers began extracting peat from the surrounding wetlands.
Over time, peat cutting created ponds, lakes and canals that gradually evolved into the beautiful water landscape
we see today. The village's name is believed to come from ‘Geytenhornen’ (goat horns), discovered by early
settlers after a medieval flood.
National Park Weerribben Wieden
Giethoorn is much more than just a beautiful village! It lies within the spectacular National Park Weerribben
Wieden, one of the most important nature reserves in the Netherlands and the largest continuous peat bog
wetland in north western Europe. This remarkable landscape is a maze of lakes, canals, reed beds, marshes, wet
meadows and swamp forests, providing a home for countless species of birds, butterflies and aquatic wildlife.
The National Park is famous for its rich biodiversity and traditional Dutch cultural landscape. For centuries local
communities have lived in harmony with the water, harvesting reeds, fishing and navigating the waterways in
traditional flat bottomed boats known as ‘punters’.
Highlights of the walk include:
Traditional thatched roof cottages
Historic wooden bridges
Beautiful waterside gardens
Peaceful nature trails
Wetland landscapes of Weerribben Wieden
Wildlife spotting opportunities
Stunning photography locations

Geeks!
